I play bajo sexto and come to this web site to learn more about the accordion. In that the accordion is the instrument that the bajo compliments I believe it is important to have an understanding of it. For those that have questions regarding the Bajo I will be more than glad to provide any insight I may have. I have been playing for a few years and although I don't know everything I do have some information that I could share with you. So, please let me know if there is anything regarding the Bajo Sexto/quinto that I may help with.

Good Timing. I just got my Bajo back yesterday. It needs to go into the shop for a check up, set up but it should be back in action soon. Expect a lot of questions. Stoney

Picking is a matter of practice, trying to co ordinate your fretting hand with your pick hand. Like the accordion, playing your scales is important to build up speed, dexterity and accuracy. The bajo is much the same way. Play your scales slowly and then begin to pick up speed gradually. Start by using a down stroke with the pick and once you feel comfortable with that begin incoporating an up stroke. Eventually you will be using and up and down stroke when picking. This will increase your speed. Try to keep in mind that while picking, other strings which are not being played but are open, will begin to vibrate and therefore you might get a hum that will get louder as you continue to play. What I have done is incorporate what guitarist call a palm mute, which is muting these strings using the palm of my picking hand. Now this takes some practice so be patient. What has helped me is sitting down with my brothers who play accordion, before beginning practice and start running scales. They will run them on the accordion as I pick them on the bajo. It is a good warm up excercise. I hope this helps.
