Rolling Stone Magazine has named the top ten Rock songs of all time. As an aging rock fan who was totally addicted to Rolling Stone Magazine during the late 70's, all the 80's and part of the 90's, I question their credibility in this area. For one, Rolling Stone was the #1 Rock publication in the world. Now it is not about Rock. It is about everything that is commercial; Britney, NYSICK, Backstreet, Outcast, etc. etc.
But anyway, here is the list.
THE TOP TEN 1. "Like a Rolling Stone," Bob Dylan 2. "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," Rolling Stones 3. "Imagine," John Lennon 4. "What's Going On," Marvin Gaye 5. "Respect," Aretha Franklin 6. "Good Vibrations," Beach Boys 7. "Johnny B. Goode," Chuck Berry 8. "Hey Jude," Beatles 9. "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Nirvana 10. "What'd I Say," Ray Charles
Ok, first of all, Ray Charles got on there because of the sympathy vote, (He just died), Hey Jude is nowhere near the best Beatles song, Imagine by John Lennon shouldn't even be considered, and Smells like teen spirit is just to keep the younger magazine buyers happy. What's going on and Respect are not rock songs, they are soul or R&B songs, (old school R&B, not the R&B that is really just light RAP)
What about Hotel California by the Eagles, Bohemian Raphsody by Queen, Stairway to Heaven by Led Zepplin, Hound Dog by Elvis Presely, Great Balls of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis, Good Golly Miss Molly by Little Richard, etc. etc.?
How come none of these tunes has an accordion on it? HAHA. Stoney

I am sorry, but rolling stone has really proven themselves to totally suck and thier vision of rock is muddled by the simple fact that they have intermixed genres within genres.
I feel that in a world of so many songs simply narrowing them down to 10 is like a snowball surviving the great depths of hell. It will not happen.
I for one would like to see a list of the top most influential people or groups or items in Rock. You know those folks that began the genre when there was no genre to be found.
Black Sabbath for whom there would be no metal music without their existance
Elvis Presley for whom there would be no Rock without... (This could really be argued bigtime, but really can you deny the fact that he was the means that did open up the door to White America)
Beatles whom there would be no British Invation without
Ramon Ayala for who there would be no Norteno Music without
BeeGees who really pretty much opened the door to the whole 70s disco craze
MTV for their grand concept of Music Television and their historic Launch of the Buggles "Video Killed the Radio Star" at midnite 8/1/81
Leo Fender and Les Paul for giving us the solid body electric guitar!
Just to name a few!

I eventually went on to buy the Rolling Stone magazine. They actually had a list of the top 500 songs. I agreed with a lot of it but a lot of others were pure garbage. And yes, why is a magazine that purports to be a Rock mag so into Britney, Rap and any other fly by night style or band. Jimi, Janis, Jim and all the other late great rock ICONS from days gone by must be rolling in their graves. Stoney
