For anyone who has problems with Spanish (Is there aryone?) Cesar asks a very interesting question. What it the essential material for a repitoire for a group? He states that in his group, he likes about 50% of the material that they do and the other 50% is just to keep the people happy. He also states that it probably depends where you live, which I couldn't agree with more. In all band situations you are probably going to end up playing some material that you don't like, unless you are the star of the show and all the members of the band are "hired guns." If that is not the case, it will probably be a democracy so sometimes you will win, other times you will lose. If you want to play music, it's a fact of life that you need to deal with. I wouldn't exactly call the Norteña - Tejana audience "Sofisticated," like say for example Jazz fans. A Jazz audience goes to see a show expecting NOT to recognize the songs, and if they do recognize the songs, the version will be massively altered and improvised to the point of hardly being recognized. Norteña and Tejana fans go to a show expecting to hear songs that they know and expecting that those songs be close or exactly like the versions that they hear on the radio. I won't give much of an opinion on which songs, what percentage of this kind or that kind because I have no intention of trying to get into a band here in Mexico and when I do get home (Canada) and put together a band, I won't have the same problems because almost no one knows this music. They will like it just because it is new to them and has an accordion. I will say this, there is a saying in Spanish that states: El costumbre se hace LEY. (The custom becomes the LAW) Similar to stereotyping in movies. When you think of Al Pacino or Robert DeNiro what do you think of? Gangster or Police Detective. Why? Because 90% of the movies they have done have been either one of those roles. The point is that to do what you want to do, mix it up in your own style might not please everyone. But some people might really like your style and keep coming back. In the long run, doing a wide mix of covers will be more difficult at the beginning but later, if you want to mix in originals, then they will be accepted faster and easier by the audience. My 2 cents. Stoney

Hey thank you Mr Stoney for the translation, U know i feel more confortable writing in spanish.

I like this topic... to tell you the truth... I think there's a middle ground you have to meet, depending on what the situation of your performance is... If it's something like a wedding or a fifteen, or something like that, then yea, you're gonna want to play stuff that people like, like huapangos and what not. But, this last time I was home, that concert I went to of all the local bands, all the other bands kept looking at each other play. Which, in a case like that, I would bust out the most active, hardest thing I know how to play. I used to be in the drum line back in high school, and not to brag, but I was really good, probably the best in my school district... and every once in a while, anytime our 4 main high schools got together, the drumlines would duke it out, and i would play stuff that would make people pee their pants... it was that bad ass... i kid you not... anyways, when it comes to something like a battle of the bands, then bust out with what you got, no holding back... When it comes to actually making a CD or something like that, then you play your own style of music. My style is more like los Gallitos, some catchy stuff with its activeness there, but along with some merengue music thrown in... (I am half salvadorian, too, so I have to.) In that instance, you have to play your own flavor, regardless of what other people think. IT's your music, if people like it, they'll buy it... So there's always going to have to be compromises on what type of music you're gonna play, but just because it's a certain type of music, doesnt mean you cant play a song that u like... find a median in all this
