So I have been doing a lot of playing since I got home and have all the guys lined up for getting a band going. Meanwhile, I am trying to get as much experience with the accordion as possible. Friday night I got a call to go out to see a buddies Zydeco band. They asked me to bring my accordion so I did. Here is where things got a little scary. They asked me if I wanted to sit in with the band. Guitar players generally don't really get it. So we decided to play "Who were you thinkin of" by the Texas Tornadoes, (a guaranteed crowd pleaser) but the guitarist just jumped into the tune in the key of E. Not good since I have a GCF accordion. Couldn't play on that one. So then we decide to do "Hey good lookin" Again he jumps in but is playing in D. I usually do it in G, so now all the licks, runs and tricks that I know, including the main melody don't work. Then we did some other stuff I had never heard before. It's a good thing that I put so much emphasis on improvisation in my Woodshed days because I would have been in big trouble without it. Overall, I could have been embarrassed, but it is all part of the learning process. Moral of the story, make sure you know or decide on the key of the song in a situation like that. Anyway, better to make those mistakes with some other band instead of with my own. Stoney
