Living in Monterrey has its huge disadvantages, but it has its advantages too. This afternoon I went out to do some shopping at Gigante (a shopping / grocery store) and they were putting on a concert by the group Violento. I have their first two CDs and to tell you the truth didn't count myself as a big fan. Now that I have seen them in concert that has changed.
So I was hanging around the parking lot waiting for the show to start and I saw the band beside their van, so I went up and introduced myself, told them all about our little corner of the internet and how people from around the world have visited this forum (I left out the details of the former AA etc. etc.)
Well, first of all, even before they started to play they struck me as a cool bunch of guys. The conga player was especially friendly and charismatic.
I told them I would do a review of the show for my web page and they were again very cool and thanked me.
So they started the show. The accordion player is very good, (a lot better than he sounds on the CDs) and plays two Gabbys. They look like older models, one orange in Fa and the Black and white checkered type in Mi.
The show lasted about one hour.
One thing that I really liked and which you have all heard me talk about before was the animdor. They didn't have one. But the conga player, aside from doing great work on the congas and some very decent lead and background vocals, also got the crowd going, so he was really worth his weight in gold.
Bass player was very energetic and also got the crowd going. Bajo Sexto really played some interesting chords and inversions. Drummer was rock solid and energetic. Overall, a great show.
And as an added bonus, at the end of the show they sent a very special thank you and salute to all the Canadians in the audience. (With me the total numer of Canakos was ONE)
They gave me an autographed poster and said they would check out our site.
This was the kind of afternoon that makes working on this site all worthwhile.
Hope to see these guys again.
They have a new CD coming out in a week or so with their version of the Kalimba tune "No me quiero enamorar" which was a lot better live than the radio version.
I'm not saying these guys are the next Intocable or anything, but they get the job done and are real nice guys to boot.
